Parents naturally want to help their children prepare for school and with school work itself. They regularly ask, for example, whether children should know the alphabet before they start Junior Infants (not necessarily!) or be able to write (again no!) but they should be "ready" to do both before they come to school and this is where parents come in! There are a number of things that can and must be done with children from an early age that will allow them to start school with confidence and competence. Likewise when children are moving through the school they also need help at home from time to time ( with the "new" method of subtraction for example!). Teachers in Stackallen are more than willing to discuss and help parents with any of these matters but it is also good to have a specific reference point that deals with all of the above and more.
With this in mind we would advise all prospective and present parents to visit the National Council for Curriculum and Assessment website (www.ncca.ie) and then
1) Click on the centre (blue) box at the bottom (ncca).
2) Click "Early Childhood" or "Primary" (on right)
3) Click "Information For Parents" then "Early Childhood" or "Primary" (centre of page). Here you will find tipsheets etc.
Separation:
Where parents separate it is important that the Principal/ Class Teacher are informed immediately as this situation usually affects the child's behaviour in a number of ways. It is also important that both parents fully inform themselves of the child's needs and feelings in such a situation. The following link will give much relevant and helpful information for parents and children: www.barnardos.ie ( type "separation" in the search box ) |
